Over 160 Maldivian-Foreign Marriages Processed Last Year, Family Court Reveals

The Family Court has disclosed that 163 marriages between Maldivians and foreign nationals were registered last year, contributing to a total of 2,485 marriages.
The court revealed that out of the Maldivian-foreign unions, 45 involved foreign men marrying Maldivian women, while 118 foreign women married Maldivian men. In the same period, 1,326 divorces were recorded, which is more than half of the total marriages that took place last year.
Also, registration of a total 181 weddings took place overseas.

The Family Court also processed financial claims amounting to MVR 97,170,594.94, which included payments for spousal and children’s expenses, ‘iddah’ and maternity costs, and ‘mahr’. Additionally, MVR 46,792,061.34 was received in relation to wills, while MVR 47,542,924.87 was settled, including unpaid amounts from 2023.
In terms of legal orders, the court issued 117 rulings, addressing matters such as protection from domestic violence and safeguarding children’s rights.
