Over 280 Seek Tobacco Help at IGMH, Highest Among Key Facilities
The Ministry of Health reported that 288 people sought tobacco cessation support at IGMH, the highest among key facilities from January 2024 to April 2025.
Hulhumalé Hospital (HMH) followed with 110, while Dhamaveshi registered 74. ADK Hospital reported 20 cases during the same period.
The release comes as the government intensifies its efforts to reduce tobacco consumption, following a major policy decision by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to implement a generational tobacco ban. The ban will prohibit the sale and use of tobacco products for individuals born on or after 2007 and is scheduled to come into effect on 1 November 2025.
The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting after reviewing a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Health. According to the President’s Office, enforcement agencies have been instructed to initiate amendments to the relevant laws and regulations to facilitate the implementation and ratification of the legislation.
In support of the policy, the cabinet has also directed the Ministry of Finance and Planning to work in partnership with the Ministry of Health to enhance the availability and reach of tobacco cessation services across the country.
In the lead-up to the decision, Muizzu launched a poll on his official X account to gauge public opinion on the most appropriate age threshold for the generational ban.
