Over 55 Arrested in Fuvahmulah Drug and Money Laundering Crackdown

The Maldives Police Service has concluded a major anti-drug operation in Fuvahmulah City, arresting 58 individuals as part of Operation Veshi Rakkal. 

This initiative has been ongoing since 14 January 2024.

The operation involved the investigation of 4,048 suspected hotspots, questioning 1,147 individuals and reviewing the cases of 75 people. Of these, investigations into 65 cases have been forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office, according to Police.

Authorities identified and dismantled key networks involved in drug trafficking and financial crimes. Two suspects were arrested under court orders in connection with money laundering. One was found to have conducted financial transactions exceeding MVR 21 million over five years, while the other was reported to have totalled MVR 7 million over a two-year period.

Additionally, investigations are continuing into the involvement of 21 individuals and two companies in money laundering schemes.

The Maldives Police Service commended the residents of Fuvahmulah for their ongoing cooperation, highlighting the role of community engagement in addressing drug-related criminal activity.
