The Ministry of Housing has confirmed that it received a total of 8,602 complaints regarding the revised list of recipients under the Gedhoruveriya housing scheme.
The deadline for submitting complaints expired on Tuesday.
The Gedhoruveriya scheme, launched under the previous administration, involves the construction of 4,000 housing units in Hulhumalé by two Indian companies. A revised list of eligible recipients was published in February.
According to the ministry, complaints were submitted through various channels: 5,236 through the official portal, 2,840 via email, and 526 by post. Most of the portal submissions came from individuals who were not included on the recipient list, while email and postal complaints included concerns from both applicants and members of the public.
The ministry stated that it will now prioritise investigating the issues raised during the complaint period. As part of its ongoing verification process, the ministry has declared 2,695 applications ineligible and removed 424 names from the list of recipients. A large number of disqualified applicants had failed to provide sufficient documentation proving they had resided in Malé for 15 years, a key eligibility criterion.
To date, the ministry has reviewed 4,939 applications. Within the three-room category, 1,423 applicants out of 3,721 received scores above 75 points and were deemed eligible. In the two-room category, 397 applicants out of 1,218 scored above 73 points.
The ministry has not yet announced when the final list of recipients will be published or when the housing allocation process will be completed.
