MV+ News Desk | July 23, 2024

The Parliament has unanimously approved an agreement to collaborate with Sri Lanka on criminal investigations.

In a vote, 72 MPs supported the motion without opposition. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had earlier this month sought parliamentary approval for this agreement through a letter. The letter stated that the agreement aims to strengthen ties between the two countries and provide mutual assistance in criminal investigation cases.

According to the letter, the government decided on 2 June to enter the “Treaty between The Government of The Republic of Maldives and The Government of The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters,” necessitating parliamentary approval.

The treaty stipulates that maximum assistance will be provided in investigating criminal cases, in accordance with the laws and regulations of each country, and in executing the criminal justice process.

Foreign Relations Committee Chair Mathiveri MP Hassan Zareer, presenting the committee’s decision in parliament today, highlighted the agreement’s potential to enhance the criminal justice system in the Maldives.

Under the agreement, the Prosecutor General will serve as the central authority for collaboration requests. Zareer also noted that all costs incurred will be borne by the nation making the request.
