Parliament has approved President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s decision to dissolve two ministries and revise the mandates of three others as part of a government restructuring initiative.
The Ministry of Housing and Planning has been abolished, with its responsibilities reassigned to the Ministry of Construction and the Ministry of Finance. Similarly, the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has been dissolved, with its functions transferred to the Ministry of Tourism.
Under the constitution, any structural changes to government ministries require parliamentary approval. The president had submitted the proposed amendments twice for consideration. Following a review, the Government Accountability Committee endorsed the changes as presented.
As a result of the restructuring, the ministries have been renamed as follows:
- Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure
- Ministry of Finance and Planning
- Ministry of Tourism and Environment
During yesterday’s sitting, parliament approved the changes with 50 votes in favour.
