The Parliament of the Maldives approved members for the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) and the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) today.
Today’s parliament session was held outside of term because important issues needed to be addressed. The next parliament term will open on February 6, which was declared as a public holiday yesterday by the President Mohamed Muizzu.
Former MP Mohamed and Former Broadcom member Saraath Approved for Broadcom
The members approved for Broadcom are former Parliamentarian Mohamed Abdulla, who achieved fame in the Maldivian film industry before entering politics, and former commission member and lawyer Aiminath Sarahath.
Sarahath’s name was first on the list of candidates for approval, followed by journalist Shifza Musthafa and former MP Mohamed. However, when the names were called in order of preference by the President, the parliament denied Shifaza’s approval and appointed the former legislator.
President Muizzu submitted the names of these two candidates to the parliament for approval after Mariyam Waheedha and Ali Yoosuf, two of the existing members, had completed their terms.
On the list of candidates the president had sent for approval, the second name on the list was Ibrahim Muaz Ali, who had been the Spokesperson for the government during former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration. His name was omitted from the list by the committee as he had received less than 75 percent marks, which is a mandatory requirement to be sent for vote.
Parliament approves ECM’s Solah and former HRCM VP Zaahid for ECM
The parliament also approved two candidates for the ECM, who are being appointed because the parliament had dismissed two of its former candidates earlier. The new candidates, who were approved from the list of names suggested by the president, are Mohamed Zaahid, who served as the former Vice President of the Human Rights Commission (HRCM), and Abdulraheem Solah, the Secretary General of the ECM.
The previous parliament had removed Zaahid from his position as the Vice President of HRCM.
The two ECM members dismissed by the parliament are Vice President Ali Nashaath and Member Mohamed Asif.
