The Maldives Parliament is soliciting public input to implement an electronic petition (e-petition) system, marking a new initiative.

Announced by the parliament secretariat yesterday, a policy paper delineating the proposal outlines a window for public feedback open until 12:00hrs on April 29th, 2024. Members of the public are encouraged to submit their opinions via email or in writing.

The primary objective behind the introduction of the e-petition system, as articulated by the parliament, is to bolster public engagement in legislative affairs and enhance democratic governance. By modernizing the existing petition system, the initiative aims to facilitate broader public access, enabling individuals to provide feedback on matters of public interest.

To further elucidate the details of the policy paper, the parliament’s secretariat has scheduled information sessions on April 24th, 2024, and April 25th, 2024. The first session, slated for 10:00hrs on April 24th, 2024, targets relevant government bodies, political parties, universities, and civil associations. The subsequent session, scheduled for 16:00hrs on April 25th, 2024, is tailored for the general public.

The introduction of the e-petition system represents a step towards greater inclusivity, offering all members of the public the opportunity to contribute their insights to the formulation of significant policies and legislation during their developmental stages.
