The Parliament’s Security Services Committee held a closed session today to deliberate on a letter sent to Parliament requesting information about the number of employees and their salaries at the official residence of the Speaker.
This issue was raised during a committee meeting held today following the first session of Parliament’s third term.
Committee Chairman Ahmed Saleem, MP for Edhafushi, shared the letter with the committee and asked members whether to handle the matter publicly or secretly. The proposal to keep the meeting confidential was put forward by Ibrahim Falaah, the ruling PNC parliamentary group leader, and supported by Mamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim.
Muraidhooge was assigned as the official residence for the parliament speaker following the May 6 attack on former Speaker Mohamed Nasheed three years ago. Following the attack, the law was amended to extend official residences with heightened security to both the Speaker and the Chief Justice.
Current Speaker Abdul Raheem moved to Muraidhooge on 28 July.
