A motion seeking the dismissal of Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has been submitted to Parliament.

The motion was proposed by Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid, who is the deputy leader of the main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) parliamentary group. Shahid presented the motion in a letter addressed to Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, which was shared during a meeting of Parliament’s Judiciary Committee today.

In his letter, MP Shahid outlined eight key reasons for proposing Shameem’s dismissal. First, he cited the decision to file a sexual assault case against former tourism minister Ali Waheed. Secondly, he pointed to the decision to pursue a corruption case against former sports minister Ahmed Mahloof. Thirdly, he referenced the decision not to appeal the lower court’s dismissal of the 2020 rape case, which is widely known as the “safari rape case.”

Additionally, Shahid criticised the decision to drop human trafficking charges against former Milandhoo MP Ali Riza. He also mentioned the decision to dismiss charges in 77 cases of alcohol consumption, as well as the decision to drop charges in 13 cases of same-sex relations.

Furthermore, he noted the refusal to investigate allegations of same-sex relations, drug abuse, and blasphemy against Ahmed Shafeeu, the chief spokesperson of the Prosecutor General’s Office. Lastly, Shahid highlighted the decision not to pursue charges in the ventilator corruption case.

This motion follows a protest held outside Parliament on 1 July, where demonstrators called for Shameem’s resignation. The primary concern raised by the protesters was the continued use of indefinite detentions.

Hussain Shameem was appointed as prosecutor general on 8 December 2019 by then-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. He has faced ongoing criticism from PNC leaders, which dates back to the time when they were in opposition.
