An emergency motion submitted by North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu) concerning delays in funding therapy for children with disabilities has been dismissed by the Parliament after being voted down by the ruling party majority.

In his petition, MP Mohamed Ibrahim highlighted that individuals with disabilities are entitled to special legal protection, with established benefits and a legal framework in place to ensure their rights. However, he stated that recent failures by the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) to deliver on these commitments have left many families struggling.

The MP accused NSPA of negligence in disbursing financial assistance, stating that long queues at therapy centers and unaffordable treatment costs were depriving many children of essential services.

“There are growing complaints from parents who are unable to access the therapy funds that were once provided through NSPA. The delay is affecting the development and well-being of our children,”Mohamed Ibrahim said during the parliamentary session today.

Despite the urgency of the issue, the emergency motion was rejected after 44 members of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) voted against it, with only 12 members voting in favor.

Parents have voiced growing frustration over the lack of support, saying the delays have caused serious setbacks in the treatment and development of their children. Many claim they have had to pause or stop therapy sessions due to the inability to cover the rising costs on their own.
