In today’s parliamentary session chaired by Vilufushi MP Hassan Afeef, the no-confidence motion submitted against the Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has been rejected.

The motion, brought forward by The Democrats, faced scrutiny over its legitimacy.

During the session, The Democrats parliamentary group leader Ali Azim questioned the adherence of the motion to established standards, asserting that it lacked the necessary components to qualify as a valid motion.

Azim raised a point of order at the onset of the sitting, highlighting a systemic issue with the Supreme Court’s decision to proceed with Afeef presiding over the matter.

Azim pointed out that the Motion to Dismiss Nasheed, put forth by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), did not include Dibaja, asserting that this omission rendered the resolution devoid of the necessary characteristics. He argued that, as a result, the motion should be deemed invalid.

The Democrats’ stance triggered a heated debate among members, with several supporting Azim’s assertions. Afeef, addressing the issue, acknowledged the change brought about by the Supreme Court’s decision.

In light of this, Afeef declared acceptance of the systemic motion presented by Ali Azim, emphasssing that the resolution had not been moved in accordance with the established rules of the House.
