The 20th Parliament, which took oath this year, has revised the expedited process for impeaching the President and Vice President initially introduced by the 19th Parliament.

The General Committee, tasked with reviewing the existing impeachment procedures, found that the duration set for the process was insufficient. Their report highlighted the need for more time to ensure thorough investigations and fair proceedings.

The original amendment required a seven-member committee to investigate a motion to impeach the President or Vice President within a maximum of five days. This has now been extended to ten days. Additionally, the initial two-hour notice period for appearing at impeachment investigations has been increased to five days.

Other changes include extending the six-hour notice for members to attend committee meetings to 24 hours, and lengthening the two-day period for the President to respond to the committee’s report to seven days.

These amendments were passed with the support of 64 out of the 65 members in attendance.
