Parliament has scheduled an extraordinary sitting for Wednesday to appoint a new Prosecutor General, following the resignation of Hussain Shameem on 22 August.

During the last parliamentary sitting, Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim announced that two extraordinary sessions would be necessary to complete the appointment process. The first session will involve presenting the nominees submitted by the President to Parliament, followed by a second sitting to vote once the parliamentary committee has reached a decision.

There was some controversy surrounding Shameem’s departure, with Parliament stating that they had not received his resignation letter and thus proceeded with a formal dismissal. However, Shameem maintains that he had submitted his resignation prior to the sitting.

Following Shameem’s resignation, the President’s Office opened applications for the post of Prosecutor General, with a deadline of 12:00 pm on Wednesday. The extraordinary sitting is therefore expected to take place later in the evening.
