The People’s National Congress (PNC), the main ruling party in the Maldives, is poised to commemorate its triumph in the parliamentary elections scheduled for tonight in the Male’ City.
According to PNC, the celebratory event is slated to commence at 8:30 pm at the Henveiru Artificial Beach.
The party plans to illuminate the sky with fireworks as part of its jubilation over the electoral success.
With over 200,000 Maldivians casting their votes in Sunday’s parliamentary elections, a total of 326 candidates vied for 93 seats in the upcoming parliamentary assembly, including six newly established seats.
Of the contested seats, candidates from the ruling party, PNC, competed for 90 positions.
Initial results indicate a resounding victory for the PNC, securing 68 seats, which equates to more than two-thirds of the parliamentary composition, securing the party a comfortable supermajority.
In contrast, the principal opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), faced a significant setback, managing to secure only 10 seats out of the 89 it contested.
Additionally, the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), an allied party with the PNC, secured two seats, while the Maldives National Party (MNP), another ally of the ruling party, secured one seat.
The Jumhoory Party (JP) clinched one seat, with 11 independent candidates also succeeding in securing parliamentary representation.
