The Maldives Police Service and the Ministry of Islamic Affairs have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing efforts to maintain the safety and security of all citizens across the country.

Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, Minister of Islamic Affairs, highlighted during the signing ceremony yesterday that the police have intensified their efforts to ensure public safety and promote religious unity in the Maldives. He reassured that the Ministry would fully support the Police’s initiatives moving forward.

The Minister acknowledged that, similar to other nations, extremist ideologies exist within certain groups in the Maldives. However, through collaboration with the Police, the Ministry continues to prioritise religious awareness and national cohesion.

“The ministry is working hard to establish the right ideologies. We have tried to address differences through communication and dialogue. In the Maldives, there had been separate congregations by some groups. The two institutions worked together to put a stop to this,” said Dr Shaheem.

Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau spoke about the success of various community awareness programmes, noting that all have incorporated religious education as part of their mandate. He confirmed that a new programme is planned in collaboration with the Ministry to strengthen religious understanding among police personnel.

“We are now waiting for the day when the religious programme for the police will begin. This programme will enhance and facilitate the service of the police due to increased religious awareness. It will also facilitate the efforts to maintain peace and order in the society,” the Commissioner said.

The MoU, signed by Dr Shaheem on behalf of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Commissioner Ali Shujau on behalf of the Maldives Police Service, formalises cooperation in a range of areas to support national security and community harmony.
