Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau has announced the creation of a specialised department within the Maldives Police Service (MPS) to tackle drug-related and gang crimes. The announcement was made during the launch ceremony of the MPS strategic plan.

In his address, Shujau stressed the importance of decentralising police services in accordance with the rules and standards set forth in the Police Act. He mentioned ongoing efforts to empower regional commanders to provide services tailored to local needs.

The MPS’s strategic plan focuses on five key areas and aims to significantly upgrade services over the next four years. This includes developing a national strategy to combat drug abuse and gang violence, establishing a dedicated department for these issues, and creating an anti-scam centre to reduce victimisation.

Additionally, the plan involves implementing a nationwide local policing strategy to enhance neighbourhood policing. A Digital Data and Technology Command will support data-driven and future-focused policing initiatives. The plan also aims to improve police service delivery in urban areas and introduce mid-career programmes to enhance leadership skills within the force.

Shujau emphasised the implementation of the Policing Professional Framework as a critical component of governance and decision-making within the MPS, aiming to ensure professionalism and accountability across the organisation.
