The Maldives Police Service has stated that its investigation found no evidence to substantiate claims that Rajunee Shuhaib, Head of the Police Economic Crime Investigation Unit, had acquired a Vinares flat in violation of regulations.
The allegations emerged following a media briefing where Rajunee provided details on cases involving the alleged unlawful allocation of housing flats in Hulhumalé. Shortly after the briefing, documents circulated on social media accusing him of obtaining a Vinares flat improperly. This led to public criticism, with many questioning his suitability to lead investigations into potential housing-related corruption.
As a result, Rajunee was temporarily removed from his position in the Economic Crime Investigation Unit while a probe was conducted. Speaking yesterday, Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shifan confirmed that the investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing or regulatory violations by Rajunee.
The allegations coincided with broader reports of housing irregularities. It was revealed that the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) had unlawfully allocated social housing flats to individuals not listed on the Binveriya recipients list. Additionally, forged documents were reportedly used to secure Vinares flats, further fuelling public outrage.
Both cases continue to attract widespread criticism, highlighting growing concerns over transparency and fairness in the allocation of social housing.
