Police have launched an investigation into a fire that broke out at a residence in Hulhumalé, leaving a 13-year-old boy with severe burn injuries.

According to a police media official, the investigation began after authorities received reports of the incident last Thursday. The inquiry aims to determine the circumstances under which the child sustained the burns.

Reports indicate that the fire started when the child turned on the gas knob on a stove and, after a few minutes, attempted to ignite it with a lighter. By that time, gas had already leaked into the air, resulting in a sudden explosion and flames.

The child suffered burns covering 50 per cent of his body and is currently receiving treatment at Hulhumalé Hospital.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Fire and Rescue Service was not informed of the incident at the time it occurred.
