Police Reports Over 130 Cases of Cybercrime in Fourth Quarter of Last Year

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) quarterly report for 2023 reveals a significant increase in cybercrime and embezzlement cases during the fourth quarter, with 131 cases of cybercrime and 323 cases of embezzlement investigated.
The first quarter saw 51 reported cases of cybercrime, followed by a decrease to 26 cases in the second quarter. However, there was a notable surge in cybercrime incidents in the third quarter, with 51 cases reported, before reaching a peak of 131 cases in the fourth quarter.
A breakdown of cybercrime incidents by month indicates varying levels of activity throughout the year. January recorded 14 cases, whereas February and March saw 30 and 7 cases, respectively. The number of reported cases fluctuated in subsequent months, with notable peaks in October (55 cases), November (30 cases), and December (46 cases).
Examining the types of cybercrimes reported, the data highlights prevalent categories. Credit and debit card fraud emerged as a significant concern, accounting for 67 cases throughout the year.
Hacking incidents followed closely behind, with a total of 137 reported cases. Identity theft and other forms of cybercrime registered relatively lower figures, with 3 and 18 cases, respectively, reported over the year.
In addition to cybercrime, the MPS report also addresses instances of embezzlement during 2023. The data illustrates varying numbers of reported cases each month, with notable peaks observed in August (91 cases), September (107 cases), October (103 cases), and November (124 cases).
