The Maldives Police Service is appealing for witnesses to an accident involving a police car and a motorbike, which occurred in Hulhumalé Phase II on 27 December.
The collision happened at 1:45 am at the junction of Nirolhu Magu and Gulalmaa Magu. Police stated that the patrol car was travelling westward on Gulalmaa Magu and crossing Nirolhu Magu when it collided with a motorbike reportedly speeding along Nirolhu Magu.
Authorities have urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Traffic Investigation at 9448800. The motorbike driver, an 18-year-old male, sustained critical head injuries and is currently on ventilator support at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Malé. He was initially treated at Hulhumalé Hospital before being transferred to IGMH for advanced care.
Shiham also alleged that while police issued paperwork for towing the vehicle, no documentation was provided to confirm the suspension of his son’s licence.
The Maldives Police Service described the rise in severe road accidents as “concerning” and emphasised their commitment to road safety through resource allocation and preventive measures.
The police further announced that an internal investigation would be conducted to determine if negligence by the officer driving the patrol car contributed to the crash.
This incident underscores the importance of adherence to traffic laws and the need for vigilance in maintaining road safety.
