Police to Use Body-Worn Cameras for Presidential Election

In preparation for the upcoming presidential election scheduled for September 9th, 2023, police officials have announced the deployment of body-worn cameras as part of their security measures.

Superintendent Ahmed Muslim, Deputy Commander in charge of Election Affairs, made this announcement during a press conference held to provide information on “Operation Blue Wave,” which is geared towards ensuring the security of the 2023 Presidential Election.

Addressing the press, Muslim emphasised that planning has been undertaken to fulfil the responsibilities entrusted to the police in safeguarding the integrity and security of the election process. Currently, the police are actively involved in transporting ballot papers and polling station supplies to various islands under the strict supervision of the Election Commission.

Police responsibilities also encompass the security of these crucial election materials. Special arrangements are in place to guarantee the safety of the candidates participating in the election.

To enhance security measures, the police have been equipped with tools and equipment, Notably, body-worn cameras will be utilised during the election process. Muslim detailed that police personnel will be stationed inside polling stations and polling systems, each equipped with these body cameras. 

He stressed that the usage of these cameras would strictly adhere to the existing laws and regulations.

Muslim further stated that, as of the current moment, the police have not received any reports of incidents that could potentially hinder a free and fair election. He expressed the police force’s commitment to cooperate fully with other institutions involved in ensuring the smooth and secure conduct of the elections.

The presidential election is set to take place on the 9th of September 2023, with a provision for a second round of voting on the 30th of the same month if required.
