Police Transfers 173 Foreigners to Immigration for Deportation

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has announced the transfer of 173 foreigners to Maldives Immigration for deportation, as part of ongoing efforts to tackle illegal immigration and related criminal activities.

In a press conference, Acting Head of Crime Investigation Command, Chief Superintendent of Police Ahmed Nafiz, outlined the operations conducted to identify and apprehend illegal immigrants. Nafiz stated that these operations also targeted the facilitation of prostitution by certain local individuals in collaboration with foreign nationals.

Chief Superintendent Nafiz revealed that a total of 13 operations had been conducted across various areas, involving both independent police actions and joint efforts with Immigration authorities. The outcome of these operations resulted in the transfer of 173 individuals to Immigration for deportation.

Furthermore, Nafiz highlighted that 51 safaris had been inspected since the previous year, leading to the interception of 3,097 individuals suspected of involvement in drug-related activities. Additionally, a total of 135 locals and 16 foreigners were apprehended during these operations.

The Maldives, with a significant expatriate population exceeding 100,000, faces challenges associated with illegal immigration. The government remains committed to locating and deporting individuals involved in such activities as part of its ongoing efforts to address the issue.
