The Maldives Police Service has revealed its strategic action plan set to commence tomorrow, outlining significant structural reforms aimed at bolstering law enforcement capabilities.

Among the key initiatives is the establishment of a dedicated unit to tackle gang-related crime.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shifan highlighted the core elements of the plan, which includes restructuring the police service into 17 commands and directorates, aimed at enhancing local policing efficiency. Additionally, the creation of a separate Hulhumale’ Police command aims to optimise policing efforts in the area.

Shifan underscored that these reforms are designed to institutionalize police services, enhance governance, and modernize operations to deliver more responsive and reliable public safety services.

Home Minister Ali Ihusan, earlier this month, reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritizing crime-focused policing, identifying the eradication of organized crime as a primary objective.

Last week, Ihusan also addressed concerns regarding juvenile involvement in criminal gangs, citing approximately 400 cases requiring immediate intervention across the country.

The strategic action plan represents a proactive approach by the Maldives authorities to strengthen law enforcement capabilities and address pressing security challenges facing the nation.
