Finance Minister Moosa Zameer revealed today that the salaries and remunerations of political appointees in the current administration account for just one per cent of the state budget.

Zameer made these remarks during a parliamentary session while discussing the government’s proposed austerity measures to tackle the country’s ongoing financial difficulties.

According to Zameer, the expenditure on salaries and benefits for political appointees constitutes less than four per cent of the total budget set aside for the salaries of government officials.

This comes after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced a 10 per cent reduction in pay for political appointees, senior executives of state-owned enterprises (SOEs), and top officials of independent institutions during an address last night.

The government has faced ongoing criticism for its lack of transparency regarding the details of political appointees and their remunerations, particularly as the country grapples with a deepening financial crisis.
