MV+ News Desk | December 11, 2024

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government will provide fuel to fishermen at the same rates offered by the State Trading Organization (STO) in four key locations.

Fishermen in K. Himmafushi, Ga. Kooddooo, Lh. Felivaru and S. Hulhumeedhoo will be able to buy fuel at STO rates starting from December 10, Muizzu announced during a visit to K. Gaafaru.

He further stated that vessels operating under the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) at GA. Kooddoo and Lh. Felivaru would also be able to buy fuel at the same rate.

The government aims to make petrol and diesel available at STO rates on at least one island in every atoll. With fuel storage facilities planned for 19 islands by February 2026, this initiative is expected to reduce costs for fishermen and improve nationwide fuel accessibility.

STO representatives also highlighted the role of the Ministry of Fisheries in simplifying access to this service. Through the ‘Fahi Hakatha’ portal, vessels can claim fuel more conveniently, ensuring smoother operations for fishermen.
