President Establishes Maldives Transportation and Safety Board

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu established the Maldives Transportation Safety Board yesterday, which will operate under the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation. 

The President’s Office stated that the President recognises the need for a dedicated government agency to investigate incidents and accidents across the land, sea, and civil aviation sectors, aiming to enhance the overall safety and security of the Maldives’ transportation system.

The letters addressed by the Maldives Transportation Safety Board would have the code 501.

Duties of the Maldives Transportation Safety Board 

As per the Directive regarding the safety board published by the President’s Office, the duties of the board are as follows:

  • Investigate various incidents and accidents that occur in the Maldives, whether on land, air, or sea, and identify the causes behind such incidents.
  • Provide advice and technical support to the authorities to develop transportation safety standards and regulations based on findings from investigations into various incidents and accidents in the country’s land, sea, and civil aviation sectors.
  • Advising and providing technical support to the authorities to make necessary changes in the country’s land, sea and commercial aviation sector in terms of safety and security
  • Conduct research and studies to understand the underlying safety issues and trends behind issues related to land transportation, sea transportation and aviation
  • Organise public hearings to be held in connection with various incidents and accidents in the land, mines and civil aviation sectors of the country.
  • Publicise information and publish reports in connection with investigations into various incidents and accidents in the country’s land, sea and civil aviation sectors.

According to the Maldives Police Services, 803 traffic accidents were reported to the police in the first three months of this year. In January, 234 accidents were reported; 295 traffic accidents were reported in February; and 255 traffic accidents were reported in March.
