President Muizzu Announces Plan for 33% Renewable Energy in Maldives by 2028

President Mohamed Muizzu announced plans to develop renewable energy systems capable of supplying 33% of the nation’s electrical needs within the next five years. 

Currently, the nation’s reliance on renewable energy stands at 4%. President Muizzu stated that the Maldives aims to generate a minimum of USD 600 million to achieve this goal and called for global support.

The announcement was made during the Maldives’ National Statement at the High-Level Segment of the Twenty-Eighth Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). 

In his address, the president outlined the Maldives’ expectations for COP28, emphasising the importance of the Global Stocktake to align with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5-degree trajectory. He also acknowledged the need to address the climate funding gap with measures grounded in equity and the latest scientific insights while highlighting the necessity for improved accessibility and revised assessment criteria.
