President Muizzu visited the National Thalassaemia Centre following recent protests from patients’ families regarding subpar management and the use of faulty equipment. During his visit, he inspected the centre’s facilities and noted the appointment of a civil servant to manage the centre, which has been operating without a Director General since 2017. He also announced plans to recruit five nurses for the centre.

On the podcast, the President highlighted efforts to secure necessary resources for the centre, including budget allocations for the procurement of testing equipment. He reassured the public that he would closely monitor the resolution of grievances voiced by parents and caregivers, particularly concerning the issue of blood filters.

Addressing concerns about the current building housing the Thalassaemia Centre, the President revealed plans to expedite work on the “Orange Hiya” building, where the centre will relocate. He announced that the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) will take over the completion of Orange Hiya as a national project, with work set to be finished by April 28. He added that the MNDF is tasked with completing the project within a month.

President Muizzu assured that all efforts related to the transfer of services to the new premises would prioritise efficiency and patient convenience. He also announced that, once operational, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) would assign an exclusive bus stop for the building and provide free transport for patients.

Additionally, the President revealed that preparations are underway to establish a state-of-the-art thalassaemia care facility, fulfilling a promise made during his presidential campaign.
