President Signs MoU for 30,000 Housing Units in Rasmale’
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chinese government to embark on the largest housing project in Maldives, consisting of 30,000 housing units in Rasmale.
The agreement was signed during President Dr. Muizzu’s official visit to China.
Dr. Muizzu, accompanied by the Minister of Housing Land and Urban Development, Ali Haider, signed a total of 20 MoUs with the Chinese government, emphasising the strong partnership between the two nations. Among the agreements is a significant pact aimed at addressing the housing needs in Fushidhiggaru or Rasmale through the development of social housing units.
During discussions in China, President Dr. Muizzu disclosed that the 30,000 housing units in Rasmale were part of a broader plan to build a total of 65,000 housing units, including both land and flats.
However, the details regarding China’s financial assistance for the project remain undisclosed, with Housing Minister Haider stating, “The discussions are still ongoing, and we will reveal the details.”
While it is unclear whether the support from China is in the form of a loan or aid, a senior government official affirmed that the signing of the MoU solidified China’s commitment to assisting with the ambitious housing project.
President Dr. Muizzu expressed gratitude for the warm reception and support from Chinese officials, including President Xi Jinping. The two leaders participated in official talks. The Premier and Vice-Premier of China reassured President Muizzu of their close collaboration with the Maldives, emphasising a commitment to working hand-in-hand on various fronts.
