The jointly organised presidential debate by PSM and the Maldives National University (MNU), originally scheduled for the forthcoming Friday, was cancelled upon MDP presidential candidate, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s request to postpone the debate.
In an official statement released yesterday, PSM conveyed that certain contenders would be unable to partake in the scheduled presidential debate. As the election draws near, altering the debate’s timing would present challenges for the candidates in terms of their campaigning efforts, the statement elucidated.
Hence, the decision was reached that deferring the PSM debate to a later date would not be conducive, given the circumstances.
Sungu TV is gearing up to host an alternative presidential debate, with all candidates having received invitations to participate, and is scheduled for Saturday night. All candidates have confirmed their participation in the Saturday night debate from 9pm – 11pm, although the venue for the event remains undecided.
“For the enlightenment of all concerned, PSM is actively collaborating with Sangu TV for the upcoming debate,” the official statement clarified.
President Solih has opted out of the PSM event due to an existing commitment to lead a campaign rally within the city on the very same Friday. The rally, previously scheduled, will proceed as planned, as confirmed by campaign officials.
