The state-owned Road Development Corporation (RDC) has been contracted to develop heritage sites in HA. Kelaa.

The agreement for the project was signed during a ceremony held at the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage on Tuesday. Minister Adam Naseer Ibrahim signed on behalf of the government, while RDC’s Managing Director, Brigadier General Ali Zuhair, signed on behalf of the corporation.

According to the Ministry, the project aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s policy of generating revenue from heritage by diversifying tourism while preserving national identity. The initiative aims to integrate heritage into tourism in a manner that safeguards cultural authenticity while contributing to economic growth.

Minister Naseer emphasised that the Ministry’s Strategic Action Plan places significant importance on the development of heritage sites across all islands. He highlighted that these projects would be unique, incorporating economic aspects, restoration efforts, modern technology, and the reintegration of heritage into Maldivian life.

The concept design for the project is currently in progress. The Ministry previously signed an agreement with RDC on 10 March for the renovation and development of Kalaafaanu Ziyaaraiy in Adh. Hangaameedhoo.

A team from the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, the Ministry of Tourism, and the Ministry of Economic Development visited Utheemu, Thakandhoo, and Baarah in Haa Alifu Atoll from 25 to 28 February. The visit was conducted to gather necessary information for the commencement of physical work and to consult with local councils and residents.
