First Lady Sajidha Mohamed condemned the attack on Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) activist Mariyam Zubair last night.
Last night, Mariyam Zubair, a highly involved MDP activist and mother of parliamentarian for South Galohu constituency Meekail Naseem, was on her way home from the serial MDP protests when two motorists who followed her en route splashed black oil on her. Regarding this attack, Sajidha called on the public not to escalate the matter further and to allow justice to be established.
“I strongly condemn the act of splashing black oil on MDP activist Mariyam Zubair last night. Such attacks and harassment are completely unacceptable. I call on everyone to avoid escalating tension at a time like this and allow for the process of justice to be facilitated,” the First Lady said.

The spokesperson for the President’s Office, Heena Waleed, also condemned the attack on Mariyam Zubair and reiterated Sajidha’s message not to escalate the matter further.
In an interview given to Adhadhu following the attack last night, she said the attack very clearly showcases the attitude this government has towards anyone who speaks out against them.
“Therefore, we believe that there is no safety or protection from this government for MDP members or against people that speak out against [the government],” Mariyam Zubair said in her interview.
She said she has no enemies and believes the attack on her is on the orders of specific people. She believes this is a targeted attack on her and also accused President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and his wife, First Lady Sajidha Mohamed of masterminding the attack.
Pointing out the cameras on her route, she said if the police are intent on finding out who carried out the attack, they will be able to.
“I request, the police, without taking any side, to provide protection for us as well as we are Maldivian citizens,” Sajidha said.
