A salt production factory has been established for the first time in the Maldives, in Haa Alifu Atoll Dhidhdhoo, and has commenced exports to Japan.
The facility, developed by Maldivian company M Deep Investment in collaboration with a Japanese partner, produces cooking salt using seawater sourced from the island.
According to Dhidhdhoo Council President Abdullah Rasheed, the factory was opened following a partnership between the island council and the Japanese company. The project began approximately a year ago, with the council providing land for the investment. As part of the arrangement, the council will receive rental income from the land and employment opportunities have been created for local residents.
Prior to the construction of the facility, the company collected seawater from the island and sent salt samples to Japan for testing. Based on the results, the salt was found to be of high quality, which led to the decision to move forward with the project.
Rasheed noted that this type of venture is a first for the Maldives. He highlighted the potential of utilising the country’s vast ocean resources, with over 99 percent of the territory made up of sea, and said the project could serve as a model for similar initiatives in the future.
The factory has already begun production, and the salt is currently being marketed to both Japan and local resorts within the Maldives.
