Schools Close for First Term Holidays in Maldives
Schools across the Maldives have closed today for the first term holidays, marking the end of the initial term of the current academic year.
The schools are scheduled to reopen for the second term on Sunday, October 6th, 2024. The academic year commenced on May 26th, following the long holidays, with 96,000 students enrolled nationwide. Of these, 40,300 are female and 42,700 are male. Notably, 17,000 students are studying in schools located in Male’, the capital.
The Education Ministry has disclosed that for the new academic year, more than 96,000 students enrolled in various schools across the Maldives, with over 40,300 girls and 42,700 boys.

The Education Ministry reports that over 13,000 students are attending private schools, with approximately 9,000 of them based in Male’.
The school system is supported by a teaching workforce of 12,662 educators, the majority of whom are Maldivians. There are 10,729 local teachers and 1,933 foreign teachers working across the country. Additionally, 156 schools operate on a single-session basis, while 55 schools run dual-session classes.
The first term holidays officially began on Thursday, September 26th, 2024.
