Seaplane Terminal Should be Relocated to Develop VIA, Says Muizzu

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu unveiled plans for the relocation of the seaplane terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) during the launch of a significant multimillion-dollar project on Thursday night.

The relocation involves moving the seaplane terminal to an island adjacent to Hulhumale’ and connecting it to the airport via an innovative monorail system.

Muizzu outlined that the seaplane terminal, along with Funadhoo, Male’ City, and Hulhule’, will be interlinked through a series of bridges. Additionally, a comprehensive public transport system, featuring a monorail, will be established to enhance transportation for passengers, customers, and staff.

The development project aims to expedite the relocation of the seaplane terminal, leading to the reclamation of the current terminal location for apron construction. Muizzu highlighted the connection between the seaplane terminal relocation and plans to move the State Trading Organisation (STO)’s fuel storage tanks in Funadhoo to a different location. He anticipates commencing the project within the year, with an estimated completion time frame of 18-24 months.

Muizzu envisions the development of a modern financial center, convention centers, and hotels in Funadhoo as part of the broader project. 

The newly relocated seaplane terminal, originally opened in 2022 at a cost of USD 55 million, will play a pivotal role in the extensive 20-year development plan for Velana International Airport.
