The Senate of the government coalition party, the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), has today passed a resolution to dissolve the party.
The decision was announced during a meeting held at the People’s National Congress (PNC) office, chaired by the two vice-presidents of PPM. Defence Minister and PPM Vice President Ghassan Maumoon addressed the gathering, describing the day as joyous and encouraging PPM members to transition to the PNC.
During the meeting, senators raised concerns about the status of members currently holding elected positions under the PPM banner, referencing recent amendments to the Anti-Defection Bill. Party leadership acknowledged the uncertainties, stating that the Senate would receive further clarification once the matter is fully assessed.
Under the newly ratified law, political parties that dissolve are prohibited from using their former name, emblem, logo, and colours for five years. This legislation, passed by the ruling PNC-led parliament, means that no political entity can adopt PPM’s symbols during this period.
