A reception to honour and bid farewell to the scholars was hosted by Australian High Commissioner David Jessup. The event featured Ibrahim Latheef, National Security Advisor and a notable Australian alumnus, as the Chief Guest. It was attended by over 100 members of the Maldives-Australia Alumni community, alongside Australia’s Children’s Commissioner Anne Hollonds and three Australian students currently studying in the Maldives through the New Colombo Plan.
The 16 scholarships awarded this year mark a notable increase from the 12 granted in 2023 and eight in 2022, underscoring the strengthening educational ties between Australia and the Maldives.
Since the 1960s, more than 700 Maldivians have benefitted from Australian scholarships, including the Australia Awards, establishing Australia as a leading destination for higher education among Maldivian students.
The reception also celebrated growing academic collaboration between the two nations. Earlier that day, the Maldives National University and the University of Melbourne signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance research cooperation.
The Australia Awards programme aims to empower Maldivian professionals to tackle key national challenges and contribute meaningfully to their communities, reinforcing the enduring partnership between the two countries.
