Skipjack Tuna Commands 81% of Maldives’ Fisheries

The Maldives Bureau of Statistics has revealed that a substantial 126.4 thousand metric tonnes of Skipjack Tuna were caught in 2022, representing 81% of the total fish production for the year.

Notably, the Skipjack Tuna remains the predominant species caught by Maldivian fishermen, reflecting a 6.49% increase compared to the figures from 2021. The overall fish catch for 2022 saw a commendable 7% rise when juxtaposed with the previous year’s statistics.

Breaking down the composition of the catch by type in 2022, Yellowfin Tuna accounted for 18%, while Skipjack Tuna dominated the scene at 81%, with other species contributing a marginal 0.5%.

In terms of the employed resident population within the fishing industry for the year 2022, the total number stands at 7,633, with Maldivian citizens comprising 6,604 of this workforce, and foreigners making up the remaining 1,029.

Further analysis of the employment figures reveals that 3,721 individuals are engaged in the processing and preserving of fishing products. Among these, 1,657 are Maldivian workers, while 2,064 are foreigners.
