Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and President Mohamed Nasheed have called for unity within their political ranks, urging members to set aside personal grievances and work collaboratively.

In a recent post on X, Solih emphasised the importance of overcoming internal differences for the greater good of their shared political vision. He appealed to those who had left the party to return and contribute to a unified effort.

Responding to Solih’s appeal, Nasheed expressed his agreement. He acknowledged the wisdom in Solih’s words and expressed hope that everyone would heed this call for unity. Nasheed highlighted the need for a collective direction and commitment to the values and goals that originally brought them together.

Earlier, Solih extended an invitation to members of The Democrats, a breakaway faction led by former President Mohamed Nasheed, urging them to reunite with the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

This call comes in the wake of electoral setbacks faced by MDP, which Solih attributes partly to the division within the party.

Speaking to RaajjeTV on the occasion of MDP’s 19th anniversary, Solih acknowledged the electoral challenges MDP encountered, noting that the split with The Democrats had impacted the party’s performance. He emphasised the importance of unity within MDP, urging former members to set aside personal differences and collaborate for the nation’s benefit.

“This party belongs to all of us. We all contributed to its foundation, and it is imperative that we continue our journey together,” Solih remarked, highlighting the need to focus on upcoming local council elections in 2026 and the presidential election in 2028.

The division between Solih and Nasheed emerged following disagreements over governance reforms proposed by Nasheed, particularly a shift towards a parliamentary system. This rift deepened, leading Nasheed to form The Democrats, which contested independently against MDP in recent elections.

Despite initial resistance within MDP to reunification with The Democrats, Solih remains committed to preventing further fragmentation within the party. Meanwhile, Nasheed has withdrawn from active politics, relocating abroad to pursue environmental initiatives.

Solih’s efforts to reconcile and consolidate MDP’s support base are seen as pivotal in regaining electoral strength ahead of future political challenges.
