The State Electric Company (STELCO) has planted over 36,000 trees in the three months since launching its initiative to plant 500,000 trees over the next five years.

STELCO commenced the project on 5 June to mark World Environment Day, with planting activities beginning simultaneously across all 33 islands where the company operates. As of 30 September, STELCO reported that 36,825 trees had been planted, leaving 463,175 to meet its five-year target.

STELCO’s Managing Director, Hassan Fahmy, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to achieving its goal, stating, “Since the programme began in June 2024, we have consistently met our target of planting approximately 9,200 trees per month. At this pace, we are confident that we will reach our goal of 500,000 trees within 60 months.”

Fahmy also emphasised the long-term environmental benefits of the initiative, expressing gratitude to STELCO staff, local councils, and community members for their support in advancing the project.

The 500,000-tree initiative is part of a larger nationwide effort led by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who has set a goal of planting five million trees within five years. Launched on the same day as STELCO’s project, the presidential initiative aims to protect the country’s fragile ecosystems and combat climate change for future generations.

The project will focus on planting 90 species of trees, many of which are endangered in the Maldives, contributing to the preservation of the country’s biodiversity.
