State Trading Organisation (STO) has commenced preparations for Ramadan 2025, focusing on increasing stock levels of staple foods and stabilising the prices of commodities that often see a surge during the holy month.
With Ramadan set to begin in February 2025, the Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, recently held discussions with STO officials to review plans for managing the heightened demand.
The Ministry of Economic Development announced that the talks were aimed at ensuring an uninterrupted supply of essential goods and maintaining price stability during Ramadan. The ministry also stated that these measures align with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to easing the financial burden on households during the period.
President Muizzu had previously pledged to reduce the cost of consumables during Ramadan. Last year, the government supported households by distributing staple foods and offering discounts on utility bills.
For Ramadan 2025, the President has confirmed the continuation of utility bill discounts. However, in place of distributing staple foods, the administration plans to provide each household with a carton of canned tuna, a widely used item in Maldivian cuisine.
The government’s proactive approach reflects its commitment to mitigating the impact of price fluctuations during Ramadan, a time when household expenses typically rise due to increased consumption.
