Supreme Court Judge Husnu Al Suood resigns from his position in protest after three Supreme Court judges, and claiming the government is threatening judges.
In his resignation letter, he said the government has been extending their influence on the Supreme Court after they decided they can go forward with a case submitted to them regarding the newly passed law by the parliament that allows for parliamentarians to lose their seat should they resign from the political party they were elected to, or if the political party dismisses them.
Along with Suood, justices Mahaz Ali Zahir, and Dr Azmiralda Zahir were suspended from their positions on February 26, citing an ongoing criminal investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission. However, the commission has yet to disclose details regarding the investigation.
In his resignation letter, Suood pointed out that parliament had passed a bill to reduce the number of judges in the supreme court from seven to five after it ruled that it had the jurisdiction to look into a plea seeking quashing of an amendment to disqualify lawmakers if they defect or are expelled from the party.
He also accused the government of threatening all members of the Supreme Court, pushing them to conclude the case as President Dr Mohamed Muizzu wishes it.
“… as a mark of protest against this, I have resigned from the Maldives’ Supreme Court as of today,” he said in his resignation letter.
