The State Electric Company (STELCO) has announced that a suspect was arrested last night for attempting to rob one of the company’s transformer substations in the Malé area.

The incident occurred around 2:50 am at the transformer substation in the Maafannu Madharusaa area, according to a post by STELCO on X. The company stated that CCTV cameras captured footage of the man entering the premises and attempting to carry out the theft. He was subsequently arrested.

STELCO emphasised that its substations in the city are monitored by 24-hour surveillance, but the company called for public assistance to prevent such thefts, particularly at locations like the second-phase substation in Uppsala. The company also warned individuals involved in such activities that their actions could jeopardise their safety.

In addition, STELCO urged the authorities to investigate and take legal action against those involved in the buying and selling of stolen equipment.

Earlier this month, on 15 January, STELCO recognised the bravery of employees who prevented a theft from a transformer at the second-phase substation in Hulhumalé, awarding them medals of bravery.
