The Democrats (TD), founded by former President Mohamed Nasheed, nor candidates from People’s National Front (PNF) by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom managed to secure any seats in today’s parliamentary election.

The Democrats fielded 39 candidates, including seven current members of parliament. Despite their efforts, none of them succeeded in winning a seat, even those who had held their positions for several years.

Notably, MPs Eva Abdullah from Galolhu North, Ali Azim from Central Henveyru, and Imthiyaz Fahmy from Maafannu North did not manage to defend their seats in this election.

Established in July last year with several defectors from the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), The Democrats aimed to make a mark on the political landscape.

Meanwhile, Yameen parted ways with the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and formed The People’s National Front (PNF), putting forth 35 candidates for the parliamentary elections. Yameen openly criticised the government’s policies and actively campaigned for his party.

Despite their efforts, no candidate from the PNF succeeded in today’s election.

The outcome of this election signifies a significant setback for both The Democrats and Yameen’s PNF, raising questions about their strategies and future prospects in the political arena.
