The Democrats have sought to reassure the public that despite the recent departure of key figures, the party remains dedicated to its mission and committed to moving forward.

Party members acknowledged the setback but expressed optimism, insisting that their goals remain unwavering. The unexpected exit of prominent founding members, including Party President Hassan Latheef, Vice President Mohamed Shifaz, former MP Ali Azim, and the Democrats’ recent presidential running mate, Hussain Amru, has drawn widespread attention. Their decision to join the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), a former rival, has prompted speculation about the Democrats’ future.

In response, senior Democrats convened a press conference to address concerns and reassure supporters. Imthiyaz Fahmy, a senior member and former Mahchangoalhi North MP, confirmed receiving resignation letters from Latheef and Shifaz. He expressed gratitude for their contributions without elaborating on their departure and invited other National Assembly members to comment on the situation.

Hussain Firushan, the party’s Vice President and former Madaveli MP, who is currently overseeing party affairs, refuted suggestions of internal discord. He attributed the resignations to political differences rather than personal grievances. Firushan stressed the party’s commitment to collaborative decision-making and announced plans for a National Assembly meeting to chart the party’s path forward.

Firushan also highlighted the party’s resilience and plans to hold elections to fill the vacancies left by the departing members. He reiterated the Democrats’ commitment to achieving their founding objectives, expressing confidence that the party would persevere through its challenges.

Former Ungoofaru MP Ibrahim Waheed (Wadde) reinforced this message during the press conference, asserting that the party’s influence would not diminish despite its smaller membership.

The Democrats remain resolute in their mission, projecting confidence that the recent departures will not hinder their vision for a better Maldives.
