The Ministry of Transport has confirmed that individuals over the age of 60 remain eligible to apply for and obtain driving licences for cars, motorcycles, and other vehicles, provided they meet the existing requirements. The clarification follows widespread concern on social media over claims of new age-related restrictions on vehicle licences.

Confusion emerged after several media outlets reported that individuals over 60 would be limited to a new category of “special licence” restricted to motorcycles under 60cc, automobiles, and island pickups. These reports sparked public criticism and raised fears that older drivers could be barred from operating other vehicle types or that their existing licences would be invalidated upon reaching 60.

The reports quickly gained traction online, with numerous social media users voicing concern over what was perceived as discriminatory policy. A video criticising the rumoured rule was widely circulated, with users expressing frustration over the possibility of losing driving privileges due to age alone.

In response to the mounting uncertainty, Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen issued a public statement on social media platform X, confirming that no new age-based restrictions had been introduced.

According to the Minister, the second amendment to the licensing regulations, which was gazetted the same day, does not include any limitations based on age. Individuals aged 18 and above remain eligible to sit for the required examinations to obtain both temporary and permanent driving licences under the current framework.

The ministry further clarified that all previously issued licences remain valid and will not be affected by the amended regulations.
