Independent presidential candidate Umar Naseer has reported receiving death threats as his campaign gains momentum.

Umar’s campaign team took to social media to voice concerns over the safety of their candidate.

It has been disclosed that Umar has encountered death threats in the past, and some members of his campaign team have also faced similar intimidating messages.

Recognised as an anti-drug advocate in the upcoming presidential election, Naseer has garnered attention for his vow to address gang violence and eradicate drug-related issues from the nation.

His stance on these matters has exposed him to challenges, including a recent incident during a campaign event where he was assaulted.

A metal object was thrown at him from the crowd, causing injury to his face, The assailant fled the scene following the attack.

The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has outlined a legal obligation for all candidates and their running mates to receive security and protection from the time their names are publicly announced as candidates until the conclusion of the presidential election.

Tampering with the safety and security of any presidential candidate and their running mate is considered a punishable offense. ECM has urged all parties involved to refrain from resorting to violence and to uphold the safety and well-being of all candidates throughout the campaign period.
