Former Home Minister Umar Naseer has officially thrown his hat into the ring by submitting his candidacy form to the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) to contend in this year’s forthcoming presidential election as an independent candidate.

Umar has selected former Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Ahmed Saleem as his running mate.

Umar’s candidacy form was formally lodged with the ECM by his running mate, Mohamed Saleem, along with his supporters.

The political trajectory of Umar features previous independent candidacies. Notably, he contested the presidential election of 2008 as an independent candidate and also participated in the 2013 Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) presidential primary. Notwithstanding prior intentions to run in the 2018 presidential election, Umar ultimately did not do so.

In accordance with the requirements outlined in the Presidential Election Act, Umar Naseer has submitted his candidacy form with a total of 2,000 signatures. The Act stipulates a minimum of 1,500 signatures for independent candidates seeking to participate in the presidential election, a benchmark that Umar Naseer surpassed.
