The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is calling for innovative strategies tailored to the Maldives’ unique challenges as a Small Island Developing State (SIDS).

During a recent visit, UNFPA Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Mr. Pio Smith, emphasised the need to support Maldivian women, girls, and young people in the face of shifting demographics.

Mr. Smith highlighted the geographical dispersion and isolation faced by the Maldives, which can complicate the provision of essential reproductive health services. He stressed the importance of ensuring accessible knowledge and services, particularly for women, girls, and youth, to build a healthy future.

The Maldives, like other SIDS and some Asian countries, is experiencing low fertility rates and an aging population.  This trend necessitates innovative social and economic policies to support sustainable development across generations. Recent census data indicates a shrinking working-age population and a growing elderly demographic.

UNFPA is prioritizing efforts to empower the Maldives’ youth population, recognizing their importance to the nation’s future. Programs focus on providing comprehensive reproductive health services and equipping young people with essential life skills to prepare them for successful adulthood and participation in the workforce.

To address the diverse needs of the Maldives’ island communities, UNFPA advocates for tailored approaches that consider the unique circumstances of each island, especially those with small populations. This focus includes strategies to enhance connectivity and provide critical healthcare and prevention services, ensuring equitable access across the archipelago.

UNFPA is committed to collaborating with local organizations and the Maldivian government to ensure policies and programs reflect the needs of the people. The aim is to foster sustainable development that places individuals at the center of its efforts.
